Dssc is the College has a glorious past and traces its lineage to 1905 when it was set up at Devlali, Maharashtra. In 1907 it shifted to Quetta, now in Pakistan. The College shifted back to India in 1947 and is now home to the course of the joint services for the three services, under one roof.
Besides great military leaders, many of those who have graduated from here have become heads of their states, Senior Cabinet Ministers, Chief of Staff, Senior Commanders, diplomats, and civil administrators.
The list of alumini of DSSC includes HE Olusegun Obasanjo (Pesident, Nigeria, 1999 – 2007) HE Muhammadu Buhari (President, Nigeria, 2015 to date), HE Sitiveni Rabuka (President, Fiji, 1992 – 1999) and HE Gotabaya Rajapaksa (President, Sri Lanka, 2019 to date).

The DSSC is a joint services institution. It functions in accordance with the directives issued by the Chiefs of Staff Committee. The Commandant is responsible to the Chiefs of Staff Committee through the Chairman, Joint Training Committee. The aim of the Staff Course is to train selected officers of the three Services in command and staff functions in peace and war in their own service, inter-service and joint service environment, and to provide related general education to enable them to perform effectively in command and staff appointments.
Wellington is located in the Nilgiris District of Tamil Nadu, approximately 80 km from Coimbatore and 14 km from the famous hill resort town of Udhagamandalam (also called Ooty or Ootacamund). It is connected by road to Coimbatore via Mettupalayam, and to Bangalore via Ooty, Bandipur, and Mysore.
The rail link is in the form of a broad gauge train from Coimbatore to Mettupalayam, and a meter gauge ‘Hill Train’ from Mettupalayam to Wellington. Wellington lies at an altitude of 1880 meters above mean sea level and is blessed with a mild and salubrious climate throughout the year.
The annual temperature varies from 3° C to 30° C. The Nilgiris receive rainfall from the South West as well as the North-East monsoons, from June to mid-August and October to November, respectively. The annual rainfall is approximately 300 cm. The climate may not be congenial for those suffering from arthritis or asthma.
Places to Visit around Wellington
Coonoor. You cannot escape Coonoor, since most of the weekend shopping is done here. About 3 km from Wellington, Coonoor has Sims Park, Dolphin’s Nose, Lamb’s Rock, Pasteur Museum, and surrounded by some nice luscious tea gardens. Besides the small market, Coonoor has a small shopping mall (Tulsi Mall) on Mt Pleasant Road and Variety Hall near the market. Some eating joints are Gateway Hotel restaurant, La Belle Vie at McIver’s Villa, The Culinarium, Orchid Square, Hyderabad Biryani House, Mirchi, Dragon, Sri Lakshmi, and Quality Restaurant.
Ooty. Ooty, short for Ootacamund (anglicized version of Udhagamandalam), is a popular hill resort founded by the British, who wanted an escape from the heat of the plains below. over the years Ooty has suffered from overcrowding and erosion of natural resources. Ooty is about 14 km from Wellington and a car drive takes about 45 minutes to reach the town center.
Another way to get there is by the Nilgiris train which chugs at a leisurely speed and takes about twice the time. The places to see at Ooty are Ooty Botanical Gardens, the Rose Garden, Ooty Lake, Pykara Lake (DSSC has an excellent facility for sailing, kayaking, etc), and Doddabetta peak to name a few. Some recommended restaurants are Earl’s Secret at the Kings Cliff Hotel, Taj Savoy Hotel, Welbeck, and Place to Bee.
Day Trips around Wellington
Coimbatore. Coimbatore, the second most important city in Tamil Nadu, is known for its various industries, engineering goods, textile mills etc. It is about 80 kms from Wellington and takes anywhere between 2 and 2.5 hours to get there. Coimbatore has many temples, including many ancient ones. The Dhyanalinga Yogic Temple at the Isha Yoga Centre is a place where one can avail rejuvenation packages for the body, mind, and soul. There are many shopping centers in Coimbatore. It also has major malls, the Brookfields Mall and the Fun Republic Mall.
Tirupur. You may think of visiting this place only for shopping for clothes – it’s dirt cheap here!

Mysore. Mysore, the Karnataka state’s second-biggest city, is famous for its royalty – the Wodeyar family, who still have their palaces. Mysore is about 150 kms via Ooty, Masinagudi and Nanjanagudu. The Mysore Palace, Lalitha Mahal (now a hotel), Brindavan Gardens, Chamundi Hills are just a few of its attractions. There are good hotels to stay at and equally good eating places. Bangalore. Bangalore, also known as the garden city is the capital of Karnataka State. It has a population of about 11 million. Known also as an Electronics city’, besides well-known IT industries, Bangalore also has its share of tourist places like Vidhana Soudha, Tipu Sultan’s Palace, Lalbagh, Bangalore Palace, Science Museum, and much more. For those interested in shopping, there are numerous shopping malls.
Likewise, with the restaurants – you can savor the cuisine of almost all the regions in India as well as most globe cuisines. Bangalore is about 290 km from Wellington. Madurai and Rameswaram. These are important temple towns. Rameswaram is considered one of the four holy places (char dhams), one must visit once in a lifetime. The Meenakshi Amman temple in Madurai’s most important Landmark. It is also famous for chugudi cotton sarees, color dyeing, motifs, handcraft, and brassware. Chennai has many ancient temples to visit as well as churches built by the British.
